Legal Issues in E-commerce

This workshop was aimed at giving us an understanding on the legal way to do business online. I got a lot of input from this workshop and it was a good networking opportunity for me.

Through this workshop we learned:

  • The types of business entity
  • The merchant’s obligation
  • The Personal Data Protection Act
  • The Consumer Protection Act 1999
  • The tribunal for consumer claims

I went for this workshop because my aim is to start my own online business and one important aspect is to ensure everything I do is in accordance with the laws of the country to avoid any issues in the future.

One key point I learnt was about cooling off period. Cooling-off period is a period of time following a purchase when the purchaser may choose to cancel a purchase and return goods, which have been supplied, for any reason, and obtain a full refund. There is no specific time limit but the limit must be reasonable depending on factors such as type of goods, the use of which a consumer is likely to put the goods, the length of time for which it is reasonable for the goods to be used and the amount of use to which it is reasonable for goods to be put before the defect becomes apparent.

I will keep the key points from this workshop in mind when starting my business so that I can ensure that I take all precautions to avoid any legal issues.
